Discussion:
WinAMP won't play audio CD's?

I've just installed WinAMP for the first time on a new XP Pro
installation, and find it won't play audio CD's (but it will play
MP3's no problem). When I try load audio CD's or click on a .CDA file
off an already loaded CD and have Winamp try to play it, XP crashes
(its the gen_aud.dll module that's listed in the error, which is a
Winamp module, but it doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with
gen_aud.dll). I can play audio CD's with Plextools on this XP system,
and Win98 has no problem playing CD's under Winamp or anything else,
on the same system.

I have no clue yet as to what the problem is with Winamp. Anyone?

Did you try disabling gen_aud.dll? (go to \Plugins\ and rename it to e.g.
gen_aud.dll.off)

Thanks, that solved the problem of Windows crashing, and when I
dragged the files over to Winamp, it would play (after I readjusted
the CD volume control in Windows). A few problems still remain,
though:

1) Something keeps lowering the Windows CD audio volume, preventing me
from hearing output. Is there a way to prevent this in XP Pro?

2) When I click on a .CDA file (from an audio CD), its supposed to
start up in Winamp, but Winamp says "embedding" instead of the title
of the track, and kind of freezes up (but it doesn't crash now that
I've renamed gen_autcd.dll).

3) Renaming the gen_autcd.dll file means my Winamp doesn't autoplay
CD's anymore, because the plugin's no longer there.

Which WinAmp version did you install?

gen_something.dll means it's a general purpose plugin. I've never seen that
one installed with any version of WinAmp I've tried, but I don't use XP
either.
The familar plugin for CD is in_cdda.dll.

Volume control:
Check your Options->[Preferences]->[Plug-ins]->Output. There are volume
control preferences in the configuration of waveOutput or DirectSound
(whichever you use), remember that the one you leave highlighted is the one
used for output.

Auto-starting audio CDs:
In WinAmp 5, Options->[Preferences]->[General Preferences]->[File
Types]->"Explorer Settings", tick {Launch WinAmp for Audio CDs}
In WinAmp 2.8x/2.9x, Options->[Preferences]->[General Preferences]->[File
Types], tick {Associate with Audio CD's}
